Sewing room update - 1/21/19
You have probably noticed I have been less active in releasing new designs this past year? We sold our home, found another and moved. I broke my ankle the evening before the movers came! While it was a great way to get out of the heavy lifting, the 6 weeks without walking on the ankle was no fun at all :( (my first broken bone ever)! My Mom had a health scare, Father-in-law had a knee replaced, Son moved apartments at college, dog had surgery, Nephew had a destination wedding... You know how it goes, right? My life is so busy with remodeling this new house, spending time with family and helping others that my digitizing time is the last on the list at the end of the day. Good news, Mom is on the mend & healthy now, FIL is doing amazing with his new knee & most of the big projects in the house are complete. My ankle is almost 100% & I am ready to get back to doing what I love, digitizing!
Here is a little about my life this past year & a half...Our oldest son Dylan (Mitchell) got married in the fall of 2017 and now they have a baby on the way (We are beyond excited for that sweet little one to get here) and our youngest Dalton (Beau) is still at college full time. Since we are empty nesters, we decided to downsize. We found our new house 13 months ago, and began working on it. The house we purchased is a 1950's style ranch with a full basement. We love the location & size, but this house needed a complete overhaul. It took us almost 6 months to transform the entire house from flooring to removing walls (that revealed a beautiful brick fireplace, more on that later) We even remodeled the outside, removing a door from one side of the house and adding it to the opposite side, replacing stone, stairs and sidewalks on the exterier of the house. We are excited to complete more projects in this house. The one room that was at the top of my list, is my sewing room! It has been a long-drawn-out project...which is still a work in progress & getting closer to being completed. We saved all the cabinets from the house we sold (I had the cabinets custom built for my machine) to use in this house for my new sewing room.
This is the spot where my "new" sewing room will be. The walls and floor were covered in layers of paint and it had a drop ceiling. My new sewing room is in the basement & it has concrete floors. I wanted to refinish the concrete, stain it and call it a day. The first thing we did was strip the floor of all the layers of paint, which took days with a machine that grinds the paint down to concrete. After removing the paint we had a heavy spring rain (remember, this was last year) and discovered the basement had water coming up through the concrete floor. We had to put all plans on hold and get this fixed first. I couldn't imagine my cabinets, machines and fabric getting wet, eek! We researched and found out, the water coming in was from the surrounding ground water. We needed a put a perimeter drain in the entire basement, to prevent any water from entering the basement ever again. This procedure took a few days (and holy cow expensive!)
This ^ picture was taken after the drains were installed around the edge of the basement. You can see the unstained concrete around the edge (which will be covered by the cabinets. **We stained the concrete before the drain was installed.
The next step was to paint. I loved the look of the exposed floor joist on the ceiling in the basement, but wanted them painted to help with the old wood smell. We had the ceiling painted in a dark grey color to match my cabinets & I love it!
The walls were also painted a lighter shade of gray.
Next step is the cabinets were installed by my husband Erik.
He is a carpenter by trade and is very handy when it comes to all the "projects" I want to do on this house.
This is my sewing room as of today, Rudy insisted on being in the picture (he truely is my shadow). The cabinets are installed and we tried to use the old countertops, but they did not work with the layout of the cabinets in this house. New countertops are being ordered. As you can see the room is a MESS, but now all of my stuff is here (all of my sewing room boxes were in storage until a few weeks ago...which took trips almost daily to the warehouse looking for items that I needed.) I still have so many boxes of fabric, stabilizer, blanks and stuff
In this house remodel we tore out both bathrooms down to the studs. The main bathroom in this house had pink toilet & countertops, I mean who ever thought getting a pink toilet was a good thing? We have new bathrooms now, along with new flooring in some rooms and we also restored the hardwood floors in the remainder of the house. The kitchen....that is another big project for the future, but we did a lot of work on it before we moved in also.
